Frequently asked questions about Hard Disk Drives

  • What types of SSD drives are there?

Today, laptops almost exclusively use SSDs, which differ in terms of design, interface and speed. The more modern the interface, the higher the transfer rate - and therefore the overall performance of your system.

The most common standards at a glance:

    • SATA SSD (2.5 inch format)
This classic SSD uses the SATA III standard with a maximum transfer rate of 6 Gb/s (theoretically around 550-600 MB/s). It is ideal for older devices without M.2-Slo and already offers a big leap in performance compared to earlier HDDs.
    • M.2 SATA SSD
Technically identical to the 2.5-inch SATA SSD, only in a more compact design. It also achieves read speeds of up to 550 MB/s.
    • M.2 NVMe SSD (PCIe 3.0)
These SSDs use the PCI Express 3.0 bus and achieve data transfer rates of up to 3,500 MB/s when reading and 3,000 MB/s when writing - i.e. around five to six times faster than a SATA SSD.
    • M.2 NVMe SSD (PCIe 4.0)
The newer PCIe generation 4.0 doubles the bandwidth and enables read speeds of up to around 7,000 MB/s. These models are ideal for high-end or gaming laptops with a correspondingly modern mainboard.
    • M.2 NVMe SSD (PCIe 5.0)
The latest generation, which is available in the latest premium laptops, achieves a read speed of up to 12,000 MB/s - perfect for professional applications such as 8K video editing or large data analyses.

  • Which hard disk can I install in my laptop?

Which SSD you can install in your laptop essentially depends on two factors: the available interface and the physical space available in the housing.

    1. check interface
Laptops usually support one of the following standards:

    • SATA SSDs(2.5 inch form factor, usually a little slower, but very compatible), or
    • M.2 SSDs(SATA or PCIe NVMe), which are connected directly via the M.2 interface on the mainboard and enable significantly higher transfer rates.

You can find out whether your device supports SATA or M.2 - and in the case of M.2 which protocol (NVMe or SATA) - in the manufacturer specifications of the laptop (manual, website) or via the IPC-Computer spare parts finder to find out. There you can enter your model and you will only receive 100% compatible SSDs that are guaranteed to fit in your device.

    2. check available space
In addition to the main drive, some laptops offer a second M.2 slot or a free SATA port in which you can install an additional SSD. This free slot varies depending on the model - so it's worth taking a look at the manual or the device. Our video series "My laptop from the inside" will help you identify the slots in your model → To the playlist.

    3. recommendation for SSD selection
For most current laptops, M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs are the most common and most powerful choice. Older devices often use SATA SSDs in 2.5-inch format.

    4. installation and service
In the IPC-Computer Shop you will find tested, original-compatible SSDs with optional professional installation service. On request, you can not only get the right drive, but also professional installation including functional testing - directly from the IPC-Computer specialist workshop. You can order the installation including the SSD directly in the store at www.ipc-computer.de. Further services can be found in our current price list.
