Old, used-up, or defective laptop or notebook batteries must never be disposed of with household trash!
The reason is that substances contained in batteries, such as mercury, cadmium, and lead, are toxic. Furthermore, if disposed of improperly, they harm the environment.
However, old batteries are also valuable. As a recycled raw material, the lithium they contain, for example, is cheaper and more resource-efficient. Furthermore, recycling batteries allows for the recovery of other valuable materials such as zinc, steel/iron, aluminum, nickel, copper, silver, manganese, and cobalt.
In Germany, there is a legal regulation governing the disposal of batteries and rechargeable batteries (BattG).
The most important rules are:
- Consumers are legally required to use the available return options or to arrange for proper disposal themselves.
- Retailers who sell rechargeable batteries or devices containing rechargeable batteries must accept them for disposal. However, retailers are only required to accept the types of rechargeable batteries that they sell.
Rechargeable batteries purchased from us can be safely packaged and returned to us free of charge. What should you keep in mind?
Lithium-ion batteries, such as those used in laptops or notebooks, should be protected against short circuits before disposal. To do this, simply cover the contacts with a piece of tape before placing the batteries in the recycling bin. Under no circumstances should batteries be exposed to moisture, such as by storing them in the refrigerator.
If rechargeable batteries are being returned by mail, the package must be labeled accordingly. Appropriate labels indicating different types of batteries can be found online for printing.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: SHIPPING DEFECTIVE RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES IS PROHIBITED!
Shipping damaged, defective, or swollen lithium-ion batteries is STRICTLY PROHIBITED under hazardousmaterials regulations and poses a significant fire hazard!
LIFE-THREATENING: Defective Li-ion batteries can explode at any time and cause fires—even during storage or transport.
THESE BATTERIES MUST NOT BE SHIPPED:
• Swollen or deformed batteries•
Mechanically damaged batteries (cracks, dents)
• Overheated batteries or batteries with burn
marks• Batteries with an unusual odor or fluid
leakage• Wet or short-circuited batteries

Lithium-ion batteries, such as those used in laptops or notebooks, must be protected against short circuits before being returned:
✓ Cover battery contacts with adhesive tape or electrical tape (short-circuit protection)
✓ Pack
in the original packaging or, alternatively, in well-padded packaging ✓ The battery must not be able
to move during transport ✓ Additionally, place it in a plastic bag (moisture protection)
✓ DO NOT store in the refrigerator or expose
to moisture ✓ Do not expose the package to extreme
heat or cold
